I decided to do a little more searching on the Internet and found another website that suggested putting broken crayons into silicon alphabet ice cube trays. http://lets-explore.typepad.com/weblog/2008/08/alphabet-crayons.html
In my first attempt using this method, I filled the trays with only one level of broken crayons and I just randomly selected colors that I thought would pair well together. The key to melting crayons this way is to let the crayons cool and harden in the oven without moving them, so the colors don't mix together to brown. I turned off the oven and left them in there until they were cool. The first time I used the ice cube trays, the crayons were a bit too thin and many of them broke when I tried to take them out of the trays.
